Malou is one of our newest additions to the Uhip family! Malou is ambitious and driven in everything she does, which we find incredibly inspiring. She lives a dreamy life on Gotland (an island outside the Swedish east coast) with her family, dogs and lots of other animals. Of course, we want you to get to know her as well. Therefore we asked Malou a few questions - read her answers below!

My name is Malou, and I reside on the beautiful island of Gotland with my husband, children, and a delightful menagerie of Border collies, lambs, cats, and soon, hopefully, horses!

What aspect of dog activities are you involved in?

Our primary focus revolves around training and utilizing our Border collies for practical tasks with the lambs. However, we also enjoy participating in herding competitions when time permits, alongside dedicating some hours to obedience training and competitions. Additionally, we've dipped our toes into agility trials, primarily for the sheer enjoyment it brings!

Could you describe a typical day for you?

Each day commences with tending to and feeding our animals, followed by a brisk stroll with the dogs before seeing the children off to school or preschool. During lunchtime, I try to squeeze in a training session with the dogs, allowing me to relish quality time with the children and enjoy an evening walk later on. Specific periods of the year entail more hands-on work for our dogs than others, and I must say, this practical aspect truly ignites my passion. There's simply nothing quite like collaborating with your furry companion!

What has been your most outstanding personal achievement in dog sports?

I think the most significant achievement is when the dog can be used in practical work - and, of course, when the dog becomes an Approved Herding Dog... It is a lovely receipt for the training and a proud title you wear.

What motivates you in the sport?

In herding, it is the cooperation between dog, handler and lamb. It is such an exhilarating feeling when all three communicate with each other, and it flows like a beautiful melody. In obedience, it's definitely getting the balance between the whole and the details.

What are your best tips for someone struggling with herding and/or obedience?

Never give up. See challenges/setbacks as something educational and dare to ask for help. And don't forget to have fun!

What are your future visions and dreams?

There are many future dreams, but right now, we are focusing on developing the farm and gradually expanding our lamb herd.

How do you prepare for a competition?

If I'm going to compete, I like to feel prepared. I want to have done my "homework" and feel that we have trained for this. Then anything can happen at a competition, but the feeling is always better if I know we have done a lot of training.
